The Big Picture PreCAL class is a pilot program of GOTAFE in Shepparton, Victoria, Australia. The program is based on Big Picture principles to facilitate student engagement and learning. Nearly all the students who attend this class have found traditional secondary education difficult and this innovative approach strives to re-engage them back into meaningful learning through their own personal passion and interests. The Big Picture principles include:
- Personalisation – students follow their own interests/passion and learning is personalised for each person
- Adult world immersion – students learn outside the classroom with mentors in the community
- Intellectual mission – literacy, numeracy and personal skills are developed individually
- Community partnership – Parents and community members are included in the students learning
- Contexts for reflection – learning journals and exhibitions are few of the assessment protocols
